Barbara Arlie (Sluss) Drake a.k.a Ms. Terrific, 84, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 21, 2018.
Born in Monroe County on October 10, 1933 she was the daughter of Leatha (McClary) Zimmerman and Estel Sluss. Barbara spent her formative years growing up on Mt. Gilead Road graduating from Unionville High School and remained a loyal “Arrow” throughout her life. She started her working career tending the diner at Woolworth’s department store where she learned to make the best BLT’s ever. She then worked ten years at Sarkes Tarzian before retiring from RCA after 29 years. In post-retirement she enjoyed working part-time in the floral department at Westside Kroger where she enjoyed the opportunity to create beautiful flower arrangements. A rabid fan of all things Indiana University, Barbara was a long-time worker at IU football and basketball games. She dedicated much of her time volunteering many hours as a pink lady, RBB store and church activities. She was a devoted member of the Ellettsville First Baptist Church where she was a dedicated leader of BYF, Sunday school teacher, Deaconess, United Ministries, and ABW.
Barbara enjoyed being creative while looking for opportunity to experience new things. She had a gift for quilting, sewing, knitting, tending to vegetable and flower gardens where all flowers were her favorite, reading, and playing golf with her RCA friends. An avid traveler in retirement, she was fortunate to dip her toes in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, shop the Mall of America in Minnesota, attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans, tour Hawaii, pan for gold in Alaska while visiting points in between. If that weren’t enough for this farm girl from Unionville, she scaled the Swiss Alps (although in a tour bus), sailed along European rivers and purchased art on the streets of Paris, France, and she took a LOT of pictures.
Barbara is survived by her children, Marion (Carrie) Winkel, Jill (Darrell) Chapman, Jim (Jackie) Drake, and Roger Drake; siblings, James (Julie) Sluss of Augusta, GA, Marilyn (Max) White of Edgewood, MD, Jerry (Sandy) Sluss of Bloomington, Mike (Sherry) Zimmerman of Worthington, and Betty Nowling of Bloomington; grandchildren, Stephanie Hopkins, Kelli Webb, Krista Collins, Joshua Drake, Colton Drake, and Kyle Winkel and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James M. Drake, Jr. in 1990; stepfather, Ernest Zimmerman; sisters, Carolyn Sluss, Shirley Brown Sluss, and Sherry Freeman.
Funeral services will be held at the Ellettsville First Baptist Church on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Mark Villanova officiating. Burial follows at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Visitation will be at Chandler Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00 and again one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Ellettsville First Baptist Church, 115 S. Sale Street, Ellettsville, IN 47429
