Janice Iona (Knoy) Lusby Wood 97, of Sarasota, Florida peacefully passed away April 30, 2018. Born September 21, 1920 in Owen County, Indiana to Vesta Beryl (Summers) and Jennings Knoy. Janice graduated from Gosport High School in 1937 and was a member of the school girls’ basketball team. While attending secretarial school in Indianapolis she met Dewitt Lusby of Owen County, Kentucky through Delmer Wyatt, a mutual friend. Janice and Dewitt were married in 1939 and were blessed with five children: Patricia Kay Hanson (husband Robert Leon, deceased) of Indianapolis; Nancy Jean Dennis (husband Jerry) of Sarasota; Robert Dewitt Lusby (wife Marty) of Lafayette, Indiana; Julia Marie Davis-Murphy (deceased) of Indianapolis; and, Daniel Joseph Lusby (deceased) of Indianapolis.
She worked for a few years at JC Penny, Heinz, and Pension Fund of the Christian Church, but she was primarily a homemaker and loved gardening. Their home on South Hunter Road on the east side of Indianapolis had an abundance of nature’s produce including grape, apple, pear, walnut, cherry trees, and wild berries. These along with raising five children, her strong Christian belief, and her healthy life-style contributed to her long life.
Dewitt passed away in 1975 and a few years later at a high school reunion she re-connected with fellow classmate Lyman Wood also of Gosport and they were married in 1980. Lyman had four grown children when they married, Shirley Rowe, Dorothy McGee, Nancy Blizzard and Frank Wood. Janice and Lyman traveled in a motor home for a few years and eventually settled in Sebring, Florida. During their travels they would often stop for Sunday services at small churches along their route. After Lyman passed away in 1996 she moved to Sarasota in 2008 to be near her daughter Nancy. Janice had a very out-going, friendly personality and could make friends easily and often was able to identify a mutual acquaintance within in few minutes when meeting someone.
Janice had two older and three younger siblings. Her favorite brother, Coy Knoy passed away in 1953, followed by her older sister, Helen “Eileen” Hale. Her younger brother Ned Knoy died next followed by her youngest brother the Reverend Donald Knoy. Rosemary Smith, her youngest sister survives and lives in Gosport. In addition to her three surviving children Janice has eight grandchildren: William, Christopher, and Jennifer Hanson all of Indianapolis; Melanie (Wilhoit) Bussiere (Nancy’s daughter by her first husband David Wilhoit) of Sarasota; Michael and Gregory Lusby of Lafayette; and, Carin Davis Hansen and John Patrick Murphy of Indianapolis. There are twelve great-grandchildren and one great, great grandchild along with a large number of nieces and nephews from primarily the Knoy, Hale, and Smith families.
She will be interned alongside her first husband Dewitt in the Gosport Cemetery. There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 11:00 am arranged by Chandler Funeral Home-Whitaker Chapel in Gosport.
