Nancy J. Fenner, age 81, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning April 10th at IU Health Bloomington Hospital with her family gathered around her to say their good-byes.
She was born to Oscar & Roberta Jackson in North Carolina, the oldest of three siblings. At age 17, she met her husband, Richard Pleitt while working at the five and dime. He came through her line to buy a little, black leather phone book and asked if she would be the first one in it. They married in Chicago, Illinois and had four children. From Chicago to Pennsylvania to South Carolina, they eventually settled in Wauconda, Illinois to start a small hobby farm. Ten years later, they moved to Alton, Missouri to try hog farming. They instilled in their children, not only faith but the love of reading, to branch out and learn new things and many life skills. But one of the most important was to appreciate and become stewards of the land and nature.
Nancy also worked full-time for the Kemper Foundation in Long Grove, Illinois. She retired in 1998 after twenty-six years. Now she could pursue her passion, genealogy. She loved doing research on her family history, going to libraries, digging through the internet and sharing information with other family members who were into the same thing. Nancy had two books published on her family history and had just finished a third book.
She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Clark and husband Keith of Bloomington, Indiana; son Joseph Pleitt and wife Denise of Warrenville, Illinois; daughter Anna Kootstra and husband William of Island Lake, Illinois; and five grandchildren, Jason Pleitt, Kristina Pleitt, Nathan Pleitt, Pieter Kootstra and Haley Kootstra; and her sister, Jackie Smith and husband Phillip of North Carolina and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces/nephews and even great-grand nieces/nephews all in North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard J. Pleitt; second husband, Edwin Fenner; her infant daughter, Jane Pleitt; grandson, Nicholas Pleitt; and her brother Adel Jackson.
