Mary Alice was born to John and Ina Hight on January 16, 1929. The oldest of two children, she is survived by her sister Joan (Hight) Travis of Bloomington, Indiana. She grew up in Spencer, Indiana during the Great Depression. Mary Alice, her sister, and her parents lived with her Grandmother Hight Surber to help make ends meet during these difficult times.
During high school, she played the flute in concert band and marching band. After graduating from Spencer High School, she attended Indiana University in Bloomington where she studied English. She met and dated Ralph (Porky) Veal at IU and subsequently married him on March 24, 1951 in the First Christian Church in Spencer, Indiana during her senior year at IU.
Mary Alice and Porky raised five children: John David Bonsett-Veal (Jan), Jerry Robert Veal (Lisa), Michael Victor McKenzie-Veal (Mercedes), Stacy Ann Doub (Mark), and Matthew Alan Veal. They raised their children with a strong work ethic, a commitment to family, a love of learning, acceptance of others, and with abundant & unconditional love.
After parenting full time for many years, Mary Alice returned to the workplace when her youngest child, Matthew, started kindergarten. She worked for Indiana University’s Property and Claim Insurance Department until her husband’s death in 1978. After Porky passed, she furthered her education by returning to Indiana University full time to complete her Master's degree in Counseling. She successfully balanced her role as a student with that of being a parent and role model.
Mary Alice graduated with her Master's degree In May of 1980. Serendipitously, this same May, her son John graduated with his Doctorate from IU’s School of Optometry, her son Jerry graduated with his Baccalaureate from IU’s School of Business, and her daughter Stacy graduated from Edgewood High School in Ellettsville, Indiana.
Mary Alice rejoined the workforce as a therapist, and later as a social worker for the Area 10 Agency on Aging. She was always service oriented, and committed to helping others. When she retired, she committed herself to being a full time mother and grandmother. She spent many hours researching her family’s genealogy, reading and writing. During this period, she lived in Bloomington, Indiana, Jacksonville Beach, Florida and finally Oregon, Wisconsin when she needed the care provided by assisted living.
Mary Alice was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Mary Alice is survived by her sister, her five children and their spouses, her twelve grandchildren, her two great-grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews.
